Basic Opkg

opkg is a package manager used to install (and remove) packages within an OpenWrt Linux distribution such as Linino, packages to openwrt that is very similar to GNU/Linux package installers such as apt-get, aptitude, pacman, yum, etc. Complete documentation can be found on the OpenWRT wiki here, which explains the syntax, commands, and options for the opkg utility.

Installing Packages

Before installing a package using opkg, make sure to have the right configuration file on /etc/opkg.conf

If you want to install the latest pkgs on the development branch, please use the following configuration:

src/gz attitude_adjustment http://download.linino.org/linino_distro/master/latest/packages
dest root /
dest ram /tmp
lists_dir ext /var/opkg-lists
option overlay_root /overlay

If you want to install the latest pkgs on the release branch, please use the following configuration:

src/gz attitude_adjustment http://download.linino.org/linino_distro/release/latest/packages
dest root /
dest ram /tmp
lists_dir ext /var/opkg-lists
option overlay_root /overlay

To update the list of available packages, type the following command:

# opkg update

Then, installing a package from internet package repositories is easy and can be done with one command.

# opkg install package_name

Note also that user space daemons often require some amount of configuration and a command to start them once installed. Refer to the specific package or project for those instructions.
